With the retentions for 8 IPL teams done it is now time for the new franchises to draft their pick and march forward for the mega auction to be held at the start of 2022. Let's have a look at how the teams have gone about their retention.
- Players are retained by respective teams as they feel they will go for a larger sum in the auctions and cannot bid a high amount.
-Franchises release a player as they think they can buy them back at a reasonable price then giving them a huge sum. These two points may vary from franchise to franchise but the major point remains the same.

1. CSK
Jadeja, Dhoni, Ruturaj and Moeen Ali.
There are no surprises here with these 4 being the obvious choice for the team. Faf could have been considered with the form he is in but CSK will be eagerly waiting to get him in the mega auction.
Good to see Dhoni taking a pay cut with 12cr. What this does is that if he retires say after this IPL season then CSK will be left with 12cr which would be a huge sum. Moeen Ali was picked keeping in mind the Chepauk track where 7 home games will be played and he will be their go-to man in this turning track.
2. MI
Rohit, Bumrah, SKY, Pollard.
Same as CSK this was their expected team with the truss between Hardik, Ishan, and SKY. Finally, they have gone ahead with SKY. But I would have wanted MI to retain Ishan ahead of SKY. Many would argue that SKY has had a dream IPL for the past 4 seasons, yes no doubt in that.
The aspect where I was looking is that Ishan is a young and dynamic WK. He can be groomed well and will be with the franchise for many more years. Getting Indian WK with this quality will be rare but MI will be having different options.
3.SRH
Kane, Samad, Umran Malik.
They have gone ahead with a young squad for retention which is a good idea but the planning for the mega auction needs to be spot on. They had the likes of Warner, Rashid Bairstow to be retained but due to some reasons couldn't. This left them with no other choice but to retain the youngsters to build their team forward.
4. KKR
Rusell, Narine, V.Iyer and Varun.
This team has a mix of all (batting, all-rounders, and spinners). Not that they have all bases covered but out of all teams this team looks settled taking the retentions list. Many thought that Shubman Gill would be retained but I feel is that Shubman can be brought back without retaining a lower price as mentioned earlier.
5. PBKS.
M. Agarwal and Arshdeep.
The major work for them needs to be done at the auctions. One player who they could have retained for 4crs is Shah Rukh Khan who could have been a steal with the recent form he has shown. I think PBKS has missed the trick here. If SRK goes into the auction he will be targeted by many teams and can be brought for a good sum.
6. DC
Pant, Axar, Shaw and Nortje.
A solid Indian core for the next 5 seasons (min) along with a Foreign fast bowler. Like MI they had built a good Indian core for the last 4 seasons on their own. This could be an injustice for a franchise like DC and MI which was addressed by DC co-owner Jindal.
7. RR
Samson, Buttler and Jaiswal.
They could have retained either Stokes or Archer with them already retaining 3. Both Archer and Stokes if sent into auctions will go for a larger sum than the price they would have them retained. But there have been injury concerns with the two for the past 2 seasons keeping that in mind RR didn't want to risk.
8. RCB.
Kohli, Maxwell, and Siraj.
Getting a quality leg spinner like Chahal with proven performance in the IPL is hard in the auction. This is one area where RCB has gone wrong. Leg spinners are an asset for any T20 team. Chahal has been their best bowler in the Chinnaswamy wicket for the past 5 seasons and with IPL returning to India he should have been retained.
