Ever wondered why there is always a tussle between the ICC and the BCCI? One man who was a major part of this tussle was Sashank Manohar. When Srinivasan was the head of ICC , India had got major revenue from the ICC but when Manohar took over the share reduced considerably.
The decrease was above 10 percent and the shares for the minority boards were increased. BCCI did not like this as they account for the majority share to ICC but in return, they did not give the desired share. Manohar increased the share for the minority boards for them to develop and take cricket across globe. This did not go well with BCCI.
Global Events.
During the 2011 world Cup when Sharad Pawar was the BCCI president he convinced the govt of tax exemption and the event went on smoothly. But this was not the case during the 2016 T20 world cup. This time the BCCI could not convince the govt and thereby paying around 150crs as tax.
Star Sports who was the Official Broadcaster paid around 160crs to the govt as an advertisement revenue tax. So they deducted this amount from what they originally had to pay to the ICC. ICC in return deducted this from what they had to give to the BCCI. BCCI which had to gain a profit of over $25 million only got $3 million.
From then onwards till date there have been disputes between them. Even though India is going to host 2 major events there is a possibility that the tournament is given to another country if they don't provide ICC the guarantee of tax.
ICC recently in a letter to all boards had written that from the 2023-2031 cycle, the ICC events will be awarded to only those countries if they give a guarantee of tax exemption. This did not go well with the BCCI.
