With India losing the 2nd test it is now squared 1-1 after the end of the 2nd test and India has to now fight hard in the 3rd to win their maiden test series on South African soil. Batting once again has let the Indian team down in particular the middle order who for the past 2 years have failed to contribute. Will this series decider be the last test for Rahane and Pujara?
Winning the toss India should have looked to bowl 1st. The reason I say this is that in the SA domestic league the Highveld Lions have won all their matches in Johannesburg bowling 1st assisting the batters as the day progresses. With the trend too showing the same thing, India should have made use of this opportunity of bowling 1st.
Middle Order woes.
Last 3 years batting averages.
Cheteshwar Pujara - 28.18 and career average at 44.14.
Ajinkya Rahane - 35.15 and career average at 39.
Virat Kohli - 37 and career average at 50.
Rishabh Pant - 31.44 and career average at 37.39
Pant is a kind of player who single handedly wins you games the last time he did that in Gabba. But after that there has not been much contributions from him when the team needed him the most. Aggression should be showed when required but not always is what Pant needs to learn going forward.
If we look at these stats clearly there has been a decline in the form of these 3 affecting the middle order. Bowlers have been at their peak during this period leading to series wins overseas and in-home conditions.
With Virat Kohli preferring to go with 5 bowlers overseas will the same tactics work out in the upcoming series going forward? Look at what happened in the 2nd test against SA with the pitch getting better to bat on once again the batters let India down with poor stroke play.
With Siraj injured the bowlers were not at their best with Bumrah going for 4 rpo in the 2nd innings and didn't look in good rhythm either.
With Kohli returning back after injury who will make way for him will be tough. Will it be Rahane or Vihari or will be playing with 7 batters and 4 fast bowlers. Anything out of these can happen.
