IND vs SA : Will India win their first series in SA soil ?

It has been more than 3 decades since India had first toured SA and is yet to win a series in SA soil. Will the long wait come to end in this 3 match series? As always both teams look balanced on paper with SA losing Anrich Nortje due to an injury. India on the other hand is without Rohit Sharma Indias best batter last overseas tour.

Team Combination.

The last time when India toured SA in 2018 the batting looked not so strong. Out of the total innings played India went past 300 only once going in with 5 bowlers. Virat Kohli has openly pointed out that taking 20 wickets can only make a team win test matches which is true, but can India still afford to go in with the 5 bowlers and play a batter short? This is a question that needs to be looked at.

The reason I insisted that playing 5 bowlers will be tough is that India last time also picked 20 wickets every test but batting had let them down. With Indias primary opener injured KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal will need to step up and make a good fight for the opening spot as there are many waiting behind them.

With a 7- 4 combination the team would look settled and will have all the bases covered. SA pitches have got good bounce making Ashwin extract good bounce and will be handy with the bat. But with Kohli not preferring Ash in England there are chances that he might not go with a spinner concerning the pitch and condition.

Australia has been one team that always plays Nathan Lyon at any condition let it be NZ, Aus, SA, or Eng which are not as destructive for spinners. Leaving them behind for a series and then asking them to perform in the next subsequent series will not help them build confidence.

I would like Kohli to play Ashwin whatever the pitch looks like as he is a good all-rounder as well.

Since 2018 Ashwin has taken 43 wickets in 12 matches played in SENA countries at a avg of 28.
