Rohit Sharma has taken over the captaincy from Virat Kohli. This would be the start of a new era with many important tournaments lined for the next 3 years. Rohit has captained India before winning the Asia cup twice and has 3 IPL titles in his name. KL Rahul has been assigned the VC considering his experience he shall get to learn from Sharma and has the potential to be the next white-ball captain.
Selecting squad based on merit.
Indian squad for the NZ series has been selected. There have been few inclusions and exclusions which the selectors have not spoken about. Bhuvaneshwar Kumar has not been at his best since the 2nd half of IPL. He has not got the ball to swing much and his pace has reduced to low 130s making life for batsmen easier.
He should have been asked to perform at the domestic level and then taken into the Indian team. He did not have a major role to play in the WC as well due to form. So giving him rest or dropping him and bringing him fresh legs should have been considered.
Consistent Run.
Rahul Chahar played just 1 match that too a dead rubber against Namibia at the T20 WC. Now the selectors have dropped him without giving him a good number of opportunities. Every player needs to be given certain matches to prove themselves. Chahal having performed well in the IPL has taken Chahar's spot which makes me believe that selectors are a bit confused between the selection of both the wrist spinners.
The next T20 WC is going to be held in Australia so not many spinners would be able to go ahead. The selectors from now should select a certain number of faster bowlers and give them good match practice before the WC starts. Going only by the form in the IPL will not help the cause.
India went on with 4 spinners in the squad for the T20 WC in 2021. In Australia, they will most probably have to go with only 2 spinners. Here too the best in the business must be given equal opportunities rather than selecting players who only perform for a limited time.
