Indian cricket team off to a good start after T20 WC , but are all bases covered?

India has won the T20I series 3-0 comprehensively against the T20 WC finalists. It has been a good start for team India considering their poor run in the World Cup but still, there are key areas where they need to focus more on going forward.

On the other hand, NZ has nothing to blame for themselves playing almost 7 T20 in a gap of 15 days will be tiring for any team. So NZ not performing well in a bilateral series isn't a surprise as they compensate this in the ICC events.

Middle-order concerns.

This is an area of concern which India has to address faster. With hardly a year left the middle order looks unsettled and more so not threatening. The likes of Shreyas Iyer and Surya Kumar Yadav had a good chance to showcase what they are capable of but to be honest, they haven't justified it.

Shreyas Iyer in particular wasn't at his best in the limited chances he has got. In the 1st T20, he had a good opportunity to finish off the innings but he played a very slow knock. The same continued throughout the series where he couldn't convert his start to good knocks.

With Kohli returning for the SA series Iyer will most probably be out of contention. SKY on the other hand has not been consistent getting out too bad deliveries. He is a very positive player who shows very good intent which needs to be converted into runs.

Trying out new combinations.

Deepak Chahar has been the most expensive bowler with an economy of over 10. He could have been replaced by Avesh Khan who has done very well in the SMAT and the IPL. Chahar is not a death-over-specialist and is primarily a new ball bowler. With him being hit for runs without much swing it was ideal to try out Avesh.

Avesh can bowl in any phase of the innings as is a hit the deck bowler generating raw pace which the Indians did not have in this series. All the fast bowlers bowled below 135kph except Siraj who got injured.

Venkatesh Iyer should have been used as a 5th bowling all-rounder option but he wasn't used in the opening 2 T20. With Pandya not as his best Iyer needs to be given more chances in the future without dropping him.

Bright Spots.

Axar Patel and Ravi Ashwin have been the bright spot as far as the series is concerned. Ashwin has taken 9 wickets at an economy of less than 6 after his T20 comeback. But one thing I would be worried about is that how many spinners would be in the squad for T20 WC in Australia. Unlike UAE not many spinners will be in the final squad. So need to take a call wisely still plenty of time left.
