Countries like China, the USA, Great Britain, etc have won the maximum number of Olympic medals among all the Nations. The main reason behind this is the fact that they concentrate on sports that yield a maximum number of medals. Let's look at sports that produce the maximum number of medals one by one:
Swimming
This sport alone produces 34 gold medals. One more advantage of this sport is that an athlete can take part in more than one event of his choice and win more medals simultaneously. An example is that of Michael Phelps who alone has 22 medals overall.
Karnataka is considered as the swimming hub of India so more Olympic recognized swimming pools along with proper infrastructure set up can boost up this sport in India. This time 2 Indian athletes have qualified on merit after 100 yrs which says it all. Although we are improving more work needs to be put in through the grassroots and give them proper training.
Gymnastics
This sport has 14 gold medals in total. Like swimming in this sport too a single athlete can win multiple events. A great example is Simone Biles who at the age of 20 had won 5 medals 4G and 1B. Going forward staying fit she can participate in 3 more Olympics attaining the 20 medal mark.
In India Northeast is considered the Gymnastics hub where India has produced Dipa Karmakar. So setting a High-level performance center can get more athletes to take up.
Cycling
This sport produces 10 gold medals in total. Like other sports, an athlete can take part in multiple events. India thus far has not qualified in cycling for the past 3 Olympics. But the other fact is that India has a majority of junior cyclists ranked world no 1. So the future here looks bright but moving ahead into 2024 and 2028 India must be in a position to get medals in this sport too.
Archery
This year India has 4 athletes playing in Tokyo. Out f which it can get a maximum of 5 gold this being the fact that not many have qualified. Let's take Atanu Das who is set to participate in men's singles recurve, men's team recurve, and mixed recurve taking the overall tally of him winning a total of 3 golds.
The present sports Ministry has set up special zones where each sport is given priorities. This is a positive step going forward as India needs to concentrate on the more medal-winning sport to be in reach among other global nations.
