The Rich history of Indian Tennis.

When it comes to tennis in India people mostly talk of current-day legends such as Leander Paes and Sania Mirza but not many know about the past legends like Ramesh and Ramanathan Krishnan. Ramanathan Krishnan has achieved such success that no Indian singles player to date is unable to match.

1.Ramanathan Krishnan.


He was the first Asian to win the boy's singles title at Wimbledon in 1954. He achieved major success all through the 50s and 60s making him the best player from India. Wimbledon by many is regarded as one of the major events in sporting history, here Krishnan had reached 2 Semifinals and 4 QF finishes. To date, no Indian singles player has even reached beyond the 2nd round. Two important wins of his career would the wins against the legends of the game Rod Laver and Roy Emerson.

2.Ramesh Krishnan


He is the son of Ramanathan Krishnan. Like his father, he too was a successful player in the 80s donning the Indian colors. Having achieved success in India he reached the QF of two grand slams the Wimbledon and US Open which were his major victories in is history. He guided India to the Davis cup finals in 1987 defeating Australia.

3. Vijay Amritraj

He was one of the very few Indians to reach the QF of Wimbledon. Playing for India he led them to two Davis cup finals where countries from all around the world compete. His high career point would be beating Jimmy Conners five times of the 11 meetings. This is quite a significant defeating a legend like Connors at his peak. 

 Chennai Open.

Players like Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer have played in the ATP tournament in Chennai during the late 2010s. During the late 2010s, it was one of the ATP premier tournaments starting before the Australian Open. So players used to take this as a practice for the grand slam. From the top 20, at least 4 used to participate in this premier tournament.

Indian legend Leander Paes too started his career in Chennai from 1986 to 1991.
