The ICC had made an excellent attempt to revive the test cricket by bringing in a World Cup-like format. Although this is a good move there can be a few changes made to make it more even.
The ICC has made new changes to the next FTP where every year there will be one Global event held annually. This is being done to attract more audience, member nations, revenues, etc. But the cycle for the Test championship remains for 2 years is 2021-2023. This is a very short time frame and teams would find it hard to play test matches.
Apart from this, there is IPL where a maximum of all the major test playing nations take part for 2 months. In total there are hardly 10 months left in a year. Apart from IPL, there is BBL, CPL, SPL, etc where players take part continuously.
There is a World league for ODI where the top 8 qualify for World Cup directly so they have to take this event too seriously.
The ICC could probably increase the cycle time for the test championship by a year or two so that there is an even gap between all the formats.
In the present scenario, a series is played for 120 points not taking into consideration the number of test matches played in the series. This becomes a major disadvantage for the teams like Australia and England who play the Ashes for a duration of 5 tests. The winning team gets only 24 points for a win.
But if you look at teams like Bangladesh and New Zealand they hardly play more 3 match series and by winning a single match they get 60 points which becomes unfair.
The ICC here can bring in an equal number of points for each win regardless of the number of tests played in a series. Even some other decisions too can be made which can to be equal for all the teams.
If you look at at the points table not all teams have played equal number of matches. This means that few teams play less matches than others. This can be a disadvantage for teams playing more matches.
There is series between SA and WI between 18 to 22 June 2021 which is part of WTC (2019-2021). In this time frame, India and NZ play the finals of WTC. This seems to be rather contradicting that finals have to be only played after all the matches get over.
Great info. Let's see what ICC have in their bag for the coming years
